I hate to break it to you, but drug companies don’t find medicines for diseases, they find diseases for medicines. Examples of this are everywhere:-
- AZT – a cancer drug from the 60s, they switched to using it for HIV in the 80s
- Statins – a drug developed for hypercholesterolemia, they switched to using it for lowering LDL cholesterol
- Viagra – a drug developed to lower blood pressure, they switched to using it for erectile dysfunction
And hundreds of other cases, no doubt. What’s wrong with that? Well, just look at the first two, AZT wasn’t a cure for HIV, in fact it allegedly killed more people than it cured and it put a whole generation off HIV drugs completely. Statins lower LDL cholesterol which has been shown to be completely irrelevant to heart disease. If you put a 1000 patients on statins for 3 years you *may* prevent 2 heart attack deaths, which is statistically insignificant.
